FROM MASSIVE COPPER ALLOY pure copper would be too soft. Copper content at least 92 % +tin = the even more valuable bronze!

Advantages

  • No maintenance necessary.
  • No rust formation (no verdigris either! see verdigris or patina? ).
  • They can be re-sharpened or beveled.
  • They have an incomparably longer service life than iron appliances.
  • Working with garden tools made of copper is more energy-saving due to the material properties.
  • Not magnetically chargeable. The natural tension field in our growing medium is hardly disturbed by the intervention with copper garden tools. This improves the water balance in the soil and the behavior of the snails (see: Jane Cobbald).
  • Through experiments by the natural scientist Viktor Schauberger in the 1950s, the soil improvement and the associated growth promotion could be proven.
  • Abrasion introduces copper trace elementsinto the soil, which play an essential role in enzymatic processes: see “Copper and growth”
  • More than 20 years of experience in production.
    Enthusiastic gardeners confirm our quality.

Application

PKS copper garden tools are the ideal tools for working in vegetable and ornamental gardens, raised beds, vineyards and orchards, parks and green spaces. They combine functionality and beauty of form with particularly favorable material properties for gardening. Unlike iron or steel – the most common materials for garden tools today – copper has a positive effect on the water retention capacity of the soil and therefore helps to improve soil quality and garden produce.

More on this under Copper and growth.

The devices are not suitable for cultivating virgin soil, clearing wood, shrubs and roots or for use on very stony ground.

Here is an example of creating a garden and the copper tools used for this.
Remove the top layer with the “Merak” copper chisel.
Deep loosening with the “Pegasus” copper sow’s tooth.
Leveling with the “Perseus” copper rake.
Arrange beds as required with the versatile“Sirius” copper hoe (Heindl)…..

User instructions

  • Be careful, the edges of our appliances are very sharp when you buy them!
  • Copper tools are designed for working cultivated soils.
  • Keep the stem as dry as possible.
  • The tools do not require any special cleaning or care.
  • Deformations can be repaired by tapping* or bending – there is no risk of breakage.
  • Blunt edges can be re-sharpened if necessary by denibbing* (no loss of material) or grinding.
  • Avoid contact with chemicals containing vinegar (acetic acid). Only this leads to the formation of toxic verdigris!

Care

As already mentioned, the advantage of our tools is that they require no maintenance.
However, we are repeatedly asked whether the handles should be oiled. The wooden handles of the long tools are not oiled like the wooden handles of the small tools. There is a reason for this. The untreated tools absorb the sweat in the hands better. This prevents the formation of unpleasant blisters on the palms of the hands.
If you want to oil the handles, they will remain beautiful for longer. This does not extend their durability.

STORAGE: Preferably do not overwinter in heated rooms! The stems dry out too much and can become loose.

The manufacture of PKS copper tools since 1996

Many production processes are necessary before the product is finished. Cutting out, dengeling, soldering, welding, grinding, polishing, inserting handles.

Franz Höfler developed the “PKS copper garden tools” with his outstanding craftsmanship. The production tools and molds were handed over to Johannes Stadler and his team in 2008 after his retirement. This ensured the long-term qualityforgesurance and further development of “PKS copper garden tools”.

Our products are manufactured by hand and in the knowledge that we are making a contribution to soil improvement by using copper. Countless positive feedbacks from our customers confirm this.

Material

Metal parts

Solid copper alloys (92% – 94% copper + tin = bronze)

Exceptions: pure copper for the MAIA setting spike, brass for the handle holder of the PEGASUS soil loosener, aluminum bronze for the ANTARES digging fork.

The copper alloy is cold-hardened (dengeling) to ensure the necessary degree of hardness for handling in a cultivated soil.

Copper is an elastic metal and will not break even under rough stress. Bends can easily be ironed out (knocked out). Our garden tools are not only coated with this valuable alloy. The tools are made of solid copper alloy through and through. The tools are called copper tools because they usually consist of 94% copper and 6% tin. The soft tin develops the hard bronze.
(Freshly polished from the workshop, they can give the impression of brass. After longer storage, the tools become reddish).

Wooden handles

from our local producers.

Lime wood, untreated: Field hoe Sirius, sow’s tooth Pegasus, rake Perseus, small hoe Phoenix and Pollux long, pendulum hoe Hydra, draw hoe Sabik, Schuffl Deneb, 3-prong Taurus, Krail Merak….

Ash, untreated: Wine hoe Tuza, spade Orion, spade Auva, shovel Libra, lawn edger Herkules, digging fork Antares, rose fork Syrma….

Ash, oiled: Tucana herbal sickle, Maia setting spike…

Beech, oiled: Hand shovel Castor, hand shovel Mira, hand shovel Musca, MiniSauzahn Corvus, hand claw Lyra, setting spike Maia, weeding sling Nunki, small hoe Phoenix and Pollux, as well as Daisy cultivator Tabit….

The untreated handle of the large garden tools has a significant advantage for prolonged handling: the absorbent wooden handle reduces blistering in the palms of the hands. The durability of the handle will hardly change.
It is therefore up to the user of the long garden tools to decide whether they prefer to oil the handle so that it stays nice and clean for longer.

All wood for our handles is PEFC certified. The Pan-European Wood Certification Initiative awards a seal of quality for wood from sustainable forest management www.pefc.at.
